VIDEO: When We Can Judge & Recognize People To Be From The Khawārij | Shaykh Muḥammad Ibn Ṣāliḥ Al-ʿUthaymīn
The Questioner: So when we can judge them as such [to be from the Khawārij] and how can we recognize them?
Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ al-ʿUthaymīn: “This matter forces a person to stop for a moment and consider the situation; during the time of the Messenger (ﷺ), their characteristics were revealed.
The Messenger (ﷺ) informed us about their characteristics and from amongst these characteristics was what occurred during the time of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib () like the man Dhū al-Thudayyah concerning whom the Messenger (ﷺ) has informed that he was found amongst the men of Muʿāiyyah () and other than them.
However, right now we do not have the ability to judge them to be from the Khawārij unless if we learned that their belief was the belief of the Khawārij in which case we would know that they were from them.
The example of that is the one who holds the permissibility of revolting against the Imāms of the Muslims. The one who holds the permissibility of revolting against the Imāms of the Muslims, who are in fact Muslims; this is the belief of the Khawārij. We recognize that these people are strict in the religion of Allāh, however their religion does not extend beyond their throats. Their hearts are empty and void of true faith.”
