VIDEO: When An Individual Can Be Considered From The Khawārij | Shaykh ʿAbdul-Muḥsin al-ʿAbbād
The Questioner: Is the term Khawārij applied to the one who assigns disbelief to the Muslim leader and rebels against him or must he believe that the major sinners are disbelievers in addition to the rest of the beliefs of the Khawārij?
Shaykh ʿAbdul-Muḥsin al-ʿAbbād: “It is not a must that all of the characteristics of the Khawārij are present in the one who is referred to as being from the Khawārij. However, if he does not possess corrupt beliefs and instead he just seeks to rule or gain authority, then these people possess some of the characteristics of the Khawārij but not all of their characteristics. This is because the Khawārij have mistaken understandings with which they oppose the people of Islām and in addition to this they rebel against the Muslim leader.
So whoever has rebellion against the Muslim leader but does not possess those mistaken understandings, then he has something from the characteristics of the Khawārij which is rebellion against the Muslim leaders even if he doesn’t have those corrupt beliefs which are characteristic of the Khawārij. It is not necessary in order to apply this term for an individual to demonstrate every characteristic of the Khawārij or combine all of them.”
