How To Know Whether A Scholar Is Salafī | Shaykh Muḥammad Ibn Hādī Al-Madkhalī
Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī on How to Know Whether a Scholar is Salafī:
The Questioner: [How] can we know from his way whether a scholar is Salafī or other than that?
Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī: “If you see a man who finds comfort and relief with Ahl al-Sunnah, then know that he is a person of Sunnah. This is a concise criterion. And if you see that a man finds comfort and relief in religious innovation (bidʿah) then know that he is upon that.
Because the hearts and the souls are like conscripted soldiers; they will incline towards those to whom they are familiar, and they will show aversion to those with whom they differ. And now, I say to you, that from the signs of this is that if you see a caller magnify the station of our Imāms and the scholars of the call [to Salafiyyah] in the land of Saudi Arabia, from the students of the Imām Muḥammad ibn ʿAbdul-Wahhāb – may the mercy of Allāh be upon him- and his Salafī school of thought, and he follows in their footsteps and follows their methodology and traverses upon their path; know that this individual is upon good. And this applies to everyone who is like this regardless of whether they are in the Kingdom or elsewhere. Know that they are upon good.
But if you see someone other than this who follows the divergent paths which split off [from the main path]; and he holds that Ḥasan al-Banā is a great reformer, or that so & so is a reformer, or that [Muḥammad] Surūr is a reformer, or that Sayyid Quṭb is a reformer or other than them… Know that this individual is upon other than what Ahl al-Sunnah is upon. ”
